Porter Texas

The sawmill and agriculture industries are the backbone of this community. The community was originally called Porter Mill after the first sawmill in the area. The sawmill site is now Porterwood Shopping Center.

At the intersection of State Highway 494 and Farm Road 1314 in southeastern Montgomery County, Porter, Texas is on the Southern Pacific line. Founded in the late 1800s, it was the county seat from 1896 to 1915. From 1892 to 1930, there was a post office there. In 1914, Porters had 150 people, two general stores, a lumber company, and a livestock breeder. By 1940, Porter had four businesses and a population of 100.
