Atascocita Texas
The Atascocita development in northeastern Harris County is located north and south of Farm Road 1960 about six miles east of Humble and eighteen miles northeast of downtown Houston. Construction started in the 1970s, and the community was named after Atascosito Road, which followed present-day FM 1960. During the 1990s, Atascocita had over fifteen neighborhoods and was one of the fastest growing developments in Houston. In 2000, the unincorporated community had 35,757 people, numerous retail and service businesses, churches, a library, and a volunteer fire department. It was part of the Humble Independent School District, and Harris County provided police protection. This community is bordered on the east by Lake Houston and has several parks, country clubs, and golf courses, including Tour 18, a recreation of some of America’s best golf holes. There was also a 450-bed residential probation program and a 2,200-bed state jail at Atascocita. The population had almost doubled to 65,844 by 2010, and the community promoted itself as one of the “fastest growing areas in the Houston area”.
